Baby cried and cried. “What’s wrong?” Mother stooped down to pick her up. Looking her in the eyes, Mother wondered out loud, “Why don’t you smile?” Baby just stared at her mom. Maybe she understands, maybe she doesn’t. Then she begins to cry again. “Okay, okay.”
On the changing table Mother proceeds to take care of business swiftly. With the skill of a natural born processor, Mother doesn’t miss a step. Baby just stares. Mother smiles while she sings and dances her way through the change. “All done. Let’s go to the front room and dance some more.”
Mother tries hard to get some sort of response from baby, but nothing happens. Baby talks in her own language when she wants something, so Mother focuses on learning that language. “I’m sure she’ll grow out of it, she’s just not ready.” So, they dance.
